On the Sunday before last David felt too ill to watch the end of the Masters, so we knew something was very wrong. The next morning his temperature was nearing 40 degrees, his leg was very red and swollen and he felt very groggy and unwell. This time I took him straight to the Lister, but he still had to spend six very uncomfortable hours waiting for IV antibiotics and to be admitted. The staff, as always, were lovely, but the systems and the lack of communication let them (and him) down very badly.
He spent two days on the ward waiting for the fever to subside before being sent home with antibiotics. His legs is still very swollen and is likely to remain so for some time, but he is slowly recovering and the redness has reduced. He has also been able to resume taking his cancer medication. We don’t know what caused it, but even a barely visible cut or bite can allow bacteria into the blood stream, and the lack of lymph nodes mean that the body can’t get rid of it without help. The ribbing on the first three pictures is from his nighttime stocking!
