Hostage Situation

This morning David asked me to photograph the back of his leg as he had noticed new changes in the area; it feels as if we are in a perpetual waiting game to see what is going to happen next. Hopefully, it’s just scarring following the three excisions, but it’s hard not to worry as we were advised that the margins were clear after each of them. Those horrible minute cells that evade detection.

He has appointments every day next week, including two at Mount Vernon and two at the Lister, plus we are waiting for confirmation that the polyp removed on Monday is free from cancer. I’ll be pleased when he has had his PET scan and the drug treatment recommences, but we have to take a day at a time as there is so much uncertainty in our lives, and not allow cancer to hold us hostage.

This week I listened to Remember When, written (with help) by Fiona Phillips about her life with Alzheimers. In it her husband, Martin Frizell, states that he’d rather she had cancer, and I totally get that. He reminds us that cancer patients get a tremendous amount of support, which is true, and there is always hope. Maybe one day those with dementia will receive the support they deserve.
